WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has provided an initial $50,000 in humanitarian assistance in response to recent flooding and a cyclone in Mozambique. The conditions have affected an estimated 500,000 people according to the Government of the Republic of Mozambique (GRM).
Earlier this week, U.S. Chargé d'Affaires Daniel Johnson declared a humanitarian emergency in Mozambique as a result of the flooding and cyclone.
Since December 2006, heavy rains across northern and central regions of Mozambique, together with severe rainfall in neighboring countries, led to flooding along the Zambezi River Basin. Late last month, Tropical Cyclone Favio made landfall in the south of the country, further damaging infrastructure and washing away crops.
Since 2004, USAID has provided a total of $265,000 to the Mozambique Integrated Information Network for Decision Making project, an interagency hazard-identification and disaster-preparedness program that has been credited with improving the GRM's robust response to the current emergencies.
USAID is continuing to support the GRM's ongoing emergency response, working with USAID/Mozambique to identify further needs and provide additional assistance to flood and cyclone-affected populations.
The situation will continue to be monitored by USAID and updates will be provided as appropriate.
